Why Go Castellated?

Complete jobs faster, at a lower cost, and more sustainably with Next Level’s Steel’s state-of-the-art Castellated Steel Beam structural systems.

Originally invented as a workaround for the post WW2-era steel shortages, Castellated Steel Beams are instantly recognizable thanks to the repeating series of hexagonal holes created by slicing and splitting apart traditional steel I-beams, before precisely welding them back together into an offset pattern. This creates a gap-toothed look like the walls of a medieval castle, hence the name.

Castellated beams are both taller, and stronger than the original I-beam, allowing them to span farther and carry higher loads. And, as an added benefit, they are faster to erect, and currently—with a lead time of 8 to 12 weeks—have shorter lead times than traditional joist structures.

  • Fabricated to order at our dedicated production line using proprietary technology, this commercial construction system supports up to 70-foot bays with less material compared to traditional joists.
  • Reduce panel heights while maintaining the same clear heights—our Castellated Beams are 6-inches shallower than traditional joists and 18-inches shallower than joist girders.
  • Future proof and “solar-ready” without additional cost, plus eliminate the need for specified zones for remote terminal units, since the entire roof has a higher load capacity.
  • Water and sprinkler pipes, as well as electrical conduit can be run through the voids in the beams, just like traditional joists.
  • Sustainability is achieved by offering 40% more moment-carrying capacity without adding steel, resulting in an overall carbon reduction.
  • Next Level Steel’s Castellated Steel Beam structural systems can also can be used in parking garages, office buildings, and larger retail buildings.
